Welcome To Our Website

In 2005 a group of Nanaimo women were deeply moved hearing about the plight of the grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa from Stephen Lewis.

”The AIDS pandemic has left millions of children orphaned by AIDS. Without hesitation or complaint, Africa’s grandmothers have stepped in to care for them. In fact, in many countries throughout southern Africa it is estimated that 40% to 60% of orphans live in grandmother-headed households. After burying their own adult children, they take on the responsibility of caring for their grieving grandchildren, often with little or no support and while coping with their own deteriorating health…”

These women decided to become involved in the work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Gogo means grandmother in Zulu, so they called themselves NanGo Grannies and became part of the inspiration that led to the formation of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign.

NanGo Grannies Craft Sale

bevan

The NanGo Grannies had a booth at the Island Roots Market held at Beban Park on Wednesday August 5.

Thanks to Pat’s daughter we were given the use of a tent which gave us some much needed shade.

The market was quieter than usual (covid19?) but we still had sales totaling $455.13 of which the full amount goes to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, so the 4 hours was a very worthwhile effort. We may have a chance to do it again in the fall.

    20th Anniversary Quilt
The 20th Anniversary Solidarity Quilt entitled "Nurturing Generations Under the Canopy of Sisterhood" celebrates the Stephen Lewis Foundation and the Grandmothers Campaign. It depicts a grandmother tree, arms outstretched in a demonstration of her competence and leadership, with roots running deep into the heart of her community. Beneath her canopy are seedlings, symbolizing the children she has cared for during the AIDS pandemic and beyond. Representing the remarkable journey grandmothers in Africa have made in the face of adversity, this magnificent handmade quilt was crafted over 4 months by 20 grandmother groups across Canada, with contributions of fabric from over 300 women in Canada and Africa.
This remarkable work of art in honour of the Stephen Lewis Foundation's 20th anniversary is a testament to what is possible when women gather, connect and share their resources, creativity and compassion.

Stride to turn the Tide
NanGo Grannies are on the move striding in this year’s Stride to turn the Tide of HIV and AIDS in sub Saharan Africa. Some are walking and counting steps and some are counting kms running or biking. Others are gardening, swimming, paddling, rowing, dancing, yoga, golf, lawn mowing. All on the move to show our solidarity with our African sister grandmothers as they walk for water, food, medical attention, get to meetings and everywhere else they need to go. We are inspired and humbled with what they accomplish every day as they support their grandchildren and their communities.
It is easy to participate. Keep track of your daily activities from now until the end of July. Email weekly your steps or times spent in an activity to: Cynthia and they will be added to our group total.
We will be "walking" our beautiful West Coast Trail

NanGo Grannies Crafts Available
Because of recent worldwide health issues, NanGo Grannies have had to cancel or alter some of their usual events. These activities raised much needed financial support for our sister grandmothers in 15 countries in subSaharan Africa.
As the need is just as great now, if not more so, we have decided to offer some of our items for purchase online. Our crafters and sewers have been busy producing during “social distancing”. Most of our supplies are donated and we strive to “repurpose” materials such as our one of a kind aprons made from old blue jeans.
As with all monies we raise on behalf of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, all your donations will go to help African Grandmothers caring for their grandchildren orphaned by HIV/Aids.
For more details, a full display of the crafts available, including fabric masks, and for directions on how to order CLICK HERE.
